Wrinkle relaxation blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles, so they can no longer contract. For a muscle to contract, a nerve must release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine at the junction where the nerve ending meets the muscle. Acetylcholine causes the muscle to contract. Wrinkle relaxation stops the release of acetylcholine therefore the muscle does not contract.
There are many ways wrinkle relaxation can treat a wide range of issues such as the treatment of migraine, teeth grinding, crossed eyes, uncontrolled blinking, muscle stiffness and spasms.
Wrinkle relaxation by Allergan contains no animal products. Allergan use a cell-based potency assay to replace an animal-based assay for the ongoing manufacture of wrinkle relaxation, although in some markets (for example China), animal-based testing is still required to gain regulatory approval. The Allergan brands along with others do contain a tiny amount of human serum albumin.
Yes, it can stop a muscle contracting before it pulls on the skin, preventing wrinkles forming, or getting worse over time.
This is such a versatile treatment. The common areas you probably know about are the frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes). We can also treat the bunny lines (those lines either side of your nose), a gummy smile, a dimpled chin and a downturned mouth as well as reducing small lines around the mouth, vertical neck bands, jaw clenching and grinding (we can weaken the muscles that cause this and help slim the face to give a more feminine look if desired) and even reduce sweating in the armpits.
Due to the changes in the bone of the skull with age, sometimes it’s not possible to treat the horizontal lines above the outside parts of the eyebrows without dropping the brow. We do have other methods which can be used here an example being dermal filler which can be used to reduce these issues. It’s important to remember too that the point of this treatment is not to remove movement, its simply to reduce it in some areas to refresh your look – and unfortunately, even if desired, it’s not possible to completely eliminate every line, wrinkle or fold.
We do offer a follow up in two weeks as a normal part of the procedure especially if we haven’t treated you before or it’s your first time. For some, it may be necessary to top up your treatment to obtain the optimal result. If we don’t feel you need a follow up, for any reason (which will be explained at the time), then you won’t have to come back.
The treatment is a very sharp scratch, and we try to minimise any pain sensation at the time of treatment. For example, the more you inject the skin with the same needle the blunter the needle becomes hence we look to use multiple needles to ensure to minimise discomfort. Topical anaesthetic creams can be used to numb the area prior to treatment however most patients tell us that they hardly feel a thing.
You have to give the anti-wrinkle treatment time to take effect so you will not see anything happening until about day five; then you’ll slowly start to see the effect. It takes around two weeks for the final results to appear. If you are having treatment for a special event, please plan to have your treatment no less than one month prior to the event in order to account for the possibility you may need a two week ‘touch up’ for optimal results.
This treatment is not approved for administration during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
This can vary depending on the individual, and can range anywhere from 2 to 6 months, however the average time is approximately 3 months. In relation to under arm sweating, this tends to last longer: between 4 to 6 months. It’s important to remember that with a more natural look being desired, the effects don’t last as long, and more frequent treatment may be necessary to maintain this natural look. As a rule, the lower the dose, the more frequent you may need to treat the area.
This can be dependent on several factors. Most people would have treatment every 3-4 months to maintain their results, however some people prefer to let their results wear off and have treatment every 6-12 months. The choice is yours. For sweating treatments tend to be every 4 to 6 months.
There is no “antidote” to wrinkle relaxation, and the treatment cannot be reversed. When people have wrinkle relaxation treatments for the first time, it can be very worrisome but please be assured that the effects of the treatment always reverse with time!
This is dependent on the rate of facial ageing. Some people develop fine lines and wrinkles early in life, and if the lines are beginning to be ingrained into the tissue then it is appropriate to commence treatment. However, ideally, we prefer not to treat those under 25 without good reason.
This is one of the main concerns we hear a lot because people don’t want to lose their natural expressions that define their character. Please don’t worry, all treatments are customised for the individual so you can look as natural as you want to. What’s great about this treatment is you get to choose the lines and wrinkles you want to keep.
The shiny forehead you sometimes see on people who have had this type of treatment is caused by there being no muscle movement left, meaning a high amount of wrinkle relaxation has been put in this area. We can prevent this by aiming for a more natural look.
Yes, you can still raise your eyebrows and move your face as normal; however, the degree to which certain facial expressions are made, for example frowning, can be reduced.
It’s helpful if you don’t wear makeup when you come in for the procedure – but don’t worry, we can take it off for you. If you’re prone to bruising, you may want to get some arnica cream to apply topically directly after treatment or start taking arnica tablets two weeks ahead of your treatment to minimise the risk of bruising. If you have an important event coming up, you should schedule your treatment, so you have an appropriate amount of time between the procedure and your event. Remember, wrinkle relaxation takes a couple of weeks to work, and you may need an adjustment at this point.
Whilst complications are rare, they can and do happen from time to time. This could be something like a bruise following treatment, or a drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow. This is very uncommon and can be caused by either using too much wrinkle relaxation, or it being placed in the incorrect area – or sometimes it can diffuse into the wrong muscle. We prefer to start with lower doses and take a slower/natural approach, to minimise the risk of any complications. Side effects can include headache (which is not uncommon the first time after treatment), cold and flu-like symptoms, general tiredness or nausea, temporary drooping of the eyelid of eyebrow, double vision and neck weakness. Most side effects are related to the actual act of injecting the skin, not the product itself. These include minor redness or swelling around the injection site (which vanishes within 1-2hrs), minor bruising on occasions and a very small risk of infection around the entry point. This will be highlighted to you during your consultation.
Some people can be immune to the effects of wrinkle relaxation. This can happen the first time a person is injected or can develop over time. When this happens, the immune system neutralises the wrinkle relaxation. The manufacturer advises that the risk of antibody formation can be minimised by injecting the lowest effective dose and waiting the longest feasible time between injections. Approximately 1-3% of people who are injected will develop antibodies. If wrinkle relaxation is not working, the most common reasons are:
The wrinkles might be too deep for wrinkle relaxation to influence on its own. If the wrinkles are present at rest (what we call ‘static’ lines), it’s likely that wrinkle relaxation will only soften them, and you may need to look at the use of dermal filler to get further improvement.
There are certain contraindications and caution must be applied to those who have neurological diseases such as Myasthenia Gravis and Parkinson’s Disease, are taking certain antibiotics and/or blood-thinning medications. Your consultation will include taking relevant medical information and any issues will be discussed to ensure your safety.

Dermal fillers are made from a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilised, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly, closely resembling the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long-lasting but not permanent. Dermal filler treatments are widely used in medical aesthetics to lift, add volume, plump up and reduce the appearance of line and folds.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in the human body and is central to regulating cell growth and renewal. HA has impact on number of functions in the body, some of which are to bind water, lubricate the movable parts of the body such as muscles and joints and to maintain the elasticity of the skin.
Dermal filler injections provide an effective way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance. The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last anything from for around 6 to 12 months in the lip and up to 18 months in the rest of the face. Dermal filler injections can give natural looking results that do not affect facial expression. As your face changes over time, dermal fillers allow you to control you looks subtly as you age.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are the filler of choice at DermEthics. They are the most widely used; however, there are many other types of product available:
Dermal fillers have several modes of action:
Hyaluronic acid is produced by a bacterium, usually Streptococci or Bacillus which is then processed and sterilized. Cross-links are placed between the chains, making a flexible lattice structure.
The first non-animal based hyaluronic acid product, was introduced in 2003. Since then, all fillers including the Juvederm range we use at Dermethics contain non-animal hyaluronic acid. These products, however, will at some point have been tested on animals, as is required by government regulations..cessed and sterilized. Cross-links are placed between the chains, making a flexible lattice structure.
We use them first to replace any volume lost in the face with age. We all lose volume in the form of fat and bone loss, which we can replace with dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is now also used as an injectable moisturiser, which hydrates the skin from the inside, as hyaluronic acid holds water within the skin, and also makes the skin produce more collagen in response.
This procedure can be preventative, because it can stop a line from properly forming and becoming engrained into the skin. Also, because of the collagen growth that fillers can stimulate, it can help to prevent future sagging of skin
Unfortunately, no cream can provide the volume replacement provided by dermal fillers. Using topical skincare is part of the whole package, but it won’t give you either volume or the level of internal hydration that can be achieved via injectable moisturiser treatments.
Pretty much any area can be treated using dermal fillers. As part of our commitment to safety DermEthics practitioners will always advise you of the best options, there are some areas we prefer not to treat as they are either unsafe or better treated surgically.
It’s important that any dermal filler treatment is performed after a consultation to make sure it’s right for you. Pictures will be taken prior treatment to help analyse the area being treated, these pictures will include you at rest and expressing (such as in a frown, raising your brows, smiling, pouting, turning the corners of the mouth down to see how your muscles work etc…) and we’ll check to see where you might have lost volume in the face, as no two people are the same. We’ll discuss what you’re looking to achieve the outcome you are after. Sometimes, we mark up the skin as a guide to where the injections should be placed, like a surgeon would, prior to a surgical procedure.
It’s helpful if you don’t wear any makeup when you come in for the procedure in order to reduce the risk of infection – but don’t worry, we can take it off for you. If you’re prone to bruising, you may want to take some arnica before and after treatment. If you have an important event coming up, you should schedule your treatment carefully, so you have an appropriate amount of time between the procedure and your event.
If you are prone to bruising, you may wish to use arnica to help reduce any bruising. Most people will experience either no bruising (or a very small amount), which can easily be covered with makeup.
We all have different pain thresholds and at DermEthics we will always do all we can to minimise discomfort. This might involve the use of extremely fine needles, which are specially selected for the specific treatment performed, or the use of a cannula where appropriate to do so, which allows a wider area to be treated from one insertion point. We also topical anaesthetic where appropriate. It’s important to remember that the way the tissues are handled also has a bearing on how painful the procedure is, and also how much post-procedure swelling there will be. There are lots of procedural tips and tricks we use, which come with experience, so you can rest assured that you are in safe hands at DermEthics
Some clients may experience the treatment as a mild discomfort. The lips are extremely sensitive and as such cause most discomfort. Ranges of dermal fillers containing local anaesthetic are available which ease any discomfort. At DermEthics we use a local anaesthetic cream which are applied 15-20 minutes or so prior to treatment, which will ease any discomfort.
Please don’t put any of your regular makeup on until the day after the procedure, to minimise the risk of infection.
You’ll have a good idea of how the finished treatment is going to look immediately after the procedure. However, for the best results, please wait three to four weeks until all remaining swelling has reduced.
Whenever you have a procedure, there will be a degree of swelling afterwards, due to the body’s reaction to the treatment. The amount of swelling will depend on the area treated. Lips, for example, tend to swell more than the rest of the face. Sometimes, when the under-eye is treated, this can also become puffy for a while. The swelling is normally mild and resolves over a one to two week period, although it will depend on our individual response to a particular treatment.
It depends on what you’re comfortable with as a person. In the case of most injections there will be a little redness and swelling after the procedure. Some people are able to tolerate this well, others not. Some people are more comfortable having a little more time to recuperate afterwards. This is not strictly necessary though.
This treatment is not approved for use during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
As a rule, most hyaluronic acid dermal fillers e.g. Juvederm will last anywhere from 6-18 months, but as they wear off slowly, you can have additional treatment on an ongoing basis during this time period after full consultation with your practitioner. The filler will wear off in some areas more quickly than others; for example, you’ll typically see it doesn’t last as long in the lips as it does in the nose. Non-hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (such as those made from calcium hydroxyapatite, like Radiesse) will last for longer – up to 18 months.
If hyaluronic acid dermal fillers need to be removed for any reason, it is possible to do this with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This breaks down the filler in a fairly short space of time. Other products such as Radiesse are not removable.
This depends on the rate of facial ageing and whether a treatment is being performed for beautification or restoration. Some people develop fine lines and wrinkles early in life, and if the lines are beginning to be ingrained into the tissue then it is appropriate to commence treatment. For younger patients it can be appropriate to treat areas such as the cheeks or lips for enhancement, or to balance a skeletal discrepancy. The absolute minimum age for treatment is 18 and, in most cases, we prefer patients to be over the age of 25.
Yes! Modern techniques for non-surgical work mean that you will pass people in the street all the time who have had subtle, imperceptible work. The trick is to check where a person has lost volume due to ageing of the bone or fat, and then replace that volume with dermal fillers – no more, no less than this. Combining these techniques with other non-surgical methods means we deliver great, natural, subtle results for all the patients we treat.
While complications are rare, they can and do happen. This can range from a bruise or swelling that lasts a little longer than anticipated, to asymmetry in the face, to more serious issues like allergy, infection, vessel occlusion and retinal artery occlusion. Thankfully, these more serious complications are extremely rare.

Injectable moisturisers improve the condition of the skin, thanks to the water-binding capacity of hyaluronic acid. They increase the elasticity of the skin and encourage collagen production, leading to hydration, an overall improvement in skin appearance, the softening of fine lines and improved luminescence.
They can also be used to decrease the appearance of acne scars, and work very well on the neck and décolletage to improve poor skin quality and crêpe skin. In fact, they can be used anywhere on the body where the skin texture could be improved. Popular areas include the inner thighs, buttocks, arms, hands, elbows and knees. They can also be used to lighten dark circles under the eyes.
Yes, absolutely, and it works very well to prevent small lines and wrinkles forming. Due to the collagen growth that it can stimulate, it can help to prevent future sagging; injectable moisturiser can be particularly helpful in the eye area for this scenario.
Pretty much any area of the face or body can be treated using injectable moisturiser. The face is the most popular area to treat, but the neck and décolletage are also often injected. A good way to boost hydration, it’s commonly used to treat inner thighs, buttocks and wrinkly elbows or knees. Many patients like to have their lips treated to improve fine vertical lines – but without giving more volume, as they prefer to keep their natural lip shape.
There are set treatment protocols which should be adhered to for the best results which vary according to the product used. In most cases, this will involve two to three sessions of Profhilo spaced one month apart, and then a follow-up treatment every three to six months.
Over time, you will see the skin return to your pre-treatment state, although this can take some time to occur due to the collagen stimulation caused by the treatment (hyaluronic acid/filler).
No, injectable moisturiser is used to improve the texture and tone of the skin and does not give additional volume, nor does it affect the way a muscle works as wrinkle relaxation would.
There is no doubt that eyelashes are an attractive and appealing feature. Good eyelashes frame the face and define the eye area. For many of us, this can only be achieved with false eyelashes or extensions and plenty of mascara to really boost the lashes.
However, at last there is a way now to make your own natural eyelashes thicker and longer. A once daily home application of our special eyelash growth serum makes your own lashes grow longer and thicker.
Results are noticeable just 7 days after first use and builds up to full impact after 3 months .
The once-daily application extends the time period that each individual eyelash stays in the growth stage (anagen stage) of their growth cycle. As a result, lashes grow stronger, thicker, darker and longer.
Average results achieved on lashes are: 25% longer, 106% thicker, 18% darker
As you start applying the serum, you’ll first notice changes in length. Then gradually, you’ll see more thickness and the lashes will appear darker. If you’re pleased with how things are going by the time you get to around 8 weeks, then don’t stop. Full results are seen at around week 16 by which time you’ll have the full effect of your longer, thicker, darker eyelashes.
DermEthics eyelash growth serum is available on prescription only and as a result requires a consultation with our Aesthetic Clinician. It is important to commit to a three-month treatment plan for it be effective and that is why we offer a minimum three-month supply at consultation.
